Be Ye Transformed / Episode 16
You Shall Not Misuse The Name Of The Lord
In this episode, I clarify the true meaning of Exodus 20:7, "You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God." I argue that this verse is commonly misinterpreted as prohibiting casual expressions like "oh my God," when it actually warns against invoking God's name to justify evil or falsely claiming His authority. Using the Good News Translation, I connect this passage to Jesus' teachings on blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31-32, Mark 3:29, Luke 12:10), explaining that both warn against misrepresenting God's work or attributing it to evil forces.
